Clark/Smoot Begins Work on DC USA Retail Complex in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Clark/Smoot DC USA, A Joint Venture recently was awarded a contract to construct DC USA, a $150-million retail complex at 14th and Irving Streets, NW, in Washington, D.C. The complex will provide residents of the Columbia Heights neighborhood with local access to popular national retail chains.

Retailers such as Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond, Marshalls and Staples will occupy significant portions of this 550,000-square-foot development. Washington Sports Club also will open a 40,000-square-foot facility which will include a swimming pool and regulation-size basketball court.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 5 at the project site, which is situated on five acres adjacent to the Columbia Heights Metro Station. DC USA is expected to serve over 275,000 residents living within a three-mile radius of this growing neighborhood. The complex also will include two below-grade parking levels totaling 400,000 square feet.

The project is being developed by a joint venture of Grid Properties and the Gotham Organization, both based in New York City. Bower Lewis Thrower Architects of Philadelphia is leading the design efforts. Cosentini Associates will provide MEP design and Delon Hampton of Washington, D.C. will handle structural and civil disciplines. Project completion is scheduled for February 2008.
