Paula McCracken

This article is part of our series Builders at Heart, where we highlight the passions and backgrounds of the Clark team  – the things that shape us – that allow us to tackle challenges head-on, solve complex problems, and build what matters.

Meet Paula McCracken, who works across numerous projects as an operating engineer with Clark Construction. Learn what she likes most about the industry – having worked in construction for nearly two decades – and her advice to newer team members.

Tell us a little bit about your background.

My father was in the US Air Force, so I moved around a lot growing up – but I have lived in Maryland for the past 35 years. I spend most of my free time with my family and enjoy going to K-pop concerts with my teenage daughter. We already have a handful of tickets secured for this summer!

Tell us about your career with Clark so far.

I’ve worked in construction for 19 years and have been with Clark for the last 9. During this time, I have had the opportunity to work on many different projects: The Wharf, National Air and Space Museum Revitalization, Cannon House Office Building Renewal, Eisenhower Memorial, and more. As an operating engineer, I run heavy equipment like cranes and forklifts.

Who has had the most influence on your life and why?

My mom and my daughter have both been huge influences on my life. My daughter makes me want to be a better person every day. I want to be a role model for her and make her smile.

What do you like most about working in construction?

I feel a lot of pride in my work. After a project is finished, I enjoy seeing the work I contributed to in action. One of the first projects I worked on – almost 20 years ago – was a bridge that my daughter still calls “Mommy’s Bridge.”

What is your proudest accomplishment? Either personally or professionally?

I work with a great variety of people. I contribute to a lot of different jobs, and I love seeing people I worked with on a project years later at a different job. It’s like a reunion! There is great camaraderie at Clark, and I love the people that I work with.

What is your favorite thing about working at Clark?

I feel a great sense of care for people from the company. It is a great place to work; all of my managers are compassionate and take great interest in me personally and professionally and care about my next steps!

What advice would you give to a new craft employee or someone considering a career in construction?

If it’s something you want to do, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it. Follow your dreams!
