Clark and JV Partner Sign Contract with Alexandria Renew Enterprises
October 16, 2014
Alexandria, Va. – Alexandria Renew Enterprises (ARENEW) has awarded Clark and joint venture partner Ulliman Schutte Construction a $40 million contract for the ARENEW Environmental Center. This is the Clark/Ulliman Schutte team’s second contract signed with the client. Clark is currently on site constructing the Nutrient Management Facility and the Four Mile Run.
The six-story Environmental Center will feature 63,000 square feet of Class-A office space for ARENEW administrative staff. The building will be constructed adjacent to the Nutrient Management Facility and will be sheathed in a curtain wall façade; a pilkington-point supported glass wall will exist on the north façade.
The ARENEW Environmental Center is designed to achieve LEED® Platinum certification. The façade configuration is an essential component of the building’s sustainable design. The east and west façades will feature vertical sunshades to regulate the amount of direct sunlight, allowing for diffused light to enter the facility while preventing excess heat gain. The building’s south façade will contain a mixture of stone, brick, and metal panels with ribbon windows and will be equip with horizontal sunshades, complete with integral solar panels to block direct sunlight. Solar panels also will be installed on the roof and the south, east, and west sides of the mechanical penthouse to provide supplemental electricity for the facility. Additional sustainable components include a fountain located at the main entrance, an aquarium, and a two-story, biofilter wall, which will deliver clean air to the lobby area. All of these features will utilize reclaimed water, filtered by the nearby wastewater plant, showcasing that the water cleaned by the plant can be placed back into the local ecosystem and support life.
Construction is currently underway and substantial completion is scheduled for December 2015.
